| Surviving Rita! |

Well, it's been a while and I've been busy. Late Sept. we were all scattered around our county helping Hurricane Katrina evacuees and guess what!! We are staring in the face of a deadly storm ourselves! Hurricane Rita. We were going to ride it out as they say. Well, We heard it was a Cat. 5 and headed straight for us. NOPE, not staying. I was frantically trying to get my husband on the cell. He had to go to work that morning and I was so afraid he was stuck in traffic and couldn't get to us. Well, he called and made it home by noon. I had been on the internet all morning with my scrapbooking buddies trying to decide what to do! SOOO, we packed and left. I packed all of my pictures and my boys got to pack 3 of their favorite outfits. No room for toys. We headed to MeMaws lakehouse! We got there in about normal timing. We brought both vehicles packed with food/clothes/pictures/bed ding! We watched the news 24 hours a day. SOmeone stayed up at all times watched it seemed like. Usually me. I couldn't sleep. Well, the closer to land the thing got, the closer to out town. ALTHOUGH we are 2 hours from the coast! Sure enough the blasted thing wiped us out. My husband snuck out and went home to check out our home. My Sister in law lost the roof to her home as did many people in our area did! He couldn't stand not knowing, so off he went! Our home was fine, everything outside was destroyed! The kids playhouse, the trampoline, my shed with teaching supplies, 30-40 trees on our 9.5 acres. It was aweful. You couldn't tell whose home was destroyed or not because of the massive amount of downed trees. Well, he came back to get us and brought us home 2 days later. We tried to stay, but I couldn't stand not having water or a phone. We brought a generator with us, so we had a little AC, but water was a must. I made ONE trip to the creek to fill up 3 -5 gallon containers with water to flush with and I said NO MORE!! I called my good friend in Houstona nd asked if we could stay with her till our water returned! She graciously agrred to let us come! Well, while there we filed with FEMA and our insurance! We came home 3 days later and stuck in out in the dark! Lanterns were part of our everyday life. I learned quickly how to use a chainsaw because husband went back to wrk 2 days after the storm. I didn't have a choice the trees HAD to move! SO, I got up and got after it! It wasn't too bad. I don't want to do it again, but I survuved. The phone came on about day 8 or so. The water was on about day 5 or 6..when we returned from Houston. We lost everything in our fridge and had packed our food and left it with the in-laws when we left. SO, to see the Army passing out food was an awsome site as NO stores were open. When they did open, they limited what you could buy and how many peopl in at a time. The lines were a mile long. no joke! SO, we ate MRE's and were glad to have them. No news on when the schools would open for the longest time. FINALLY I get a call from my principal that we are having a meeting. I got a sitter and headed up there. My lights were still out as many people's were. The schools did have lights, but there was a lot of cleaning going on! We decided on a date to return and that was that! I still had a job..LOL Our lights returned on day 14. 2 LONG weeks of candles, lanterns, 5 people in one room w/a window AC unit, ravioliis, washing clothes with the generator and hanging to dry, etc., etc. generator I returned to work and never heard from FEMA or my insurance company! I checked FEMA everyday and even went to the school to check on it. I got denied because the lady that filled out the paper checked that I did not evacuate and there was no undoing it! UUGG!! Oh well, not the end of the world. It was WEEKS, 2 months actually before I heard from my insurance guy. He finally came out and we did fairly well. I got aoyment for my shed filled with hundreds of ruined childrens books and a decent amout for our lost food etc. My kids are still traumatized. Everytime it thunders the 4 year old thnks the hurricane is coming again. Well, we all survided and clean up is almost done. The kids got a new swing set for Christmas and are happy with it. I just pray that we get to sit out the next one! WHEW, I am exhausted. LOL
